Did you know? - A simple formula to get your business idea across in 60-seconds.
How to use shocking statistics to get your ideas across in when it matters most.
I recently worked with a CEO gearing up for a big podcast push. We spent the session refining their message with something called the Did You Know? Formula — a simple yet powerful formula for making your ideas stick. (Created by my mom @samhornintrigue)
Here’s why this matters: we only have about 60 seconds to hook someone’s attention, convey the value of our idea, and keep them engaged. If we miss that window, they tune out, turn off, or scroll on.
Here’s how to cut through the noise and get your message across with the formula.
1. Lead with Three Startling Facts
Start by presenting three shocking or eye-opening statistics. These should highlight the scope of the issue, the size of the problem, or the trend you want your audience to understand.
For example, this is what I created with my client today in about 15-minutes…
- Did you know that 20% of Americans deal with chronic pain?
- Did you know that this number has been steadily rising for 50 years?
- Did you know that therapists trained in pain management often miss two-thirds of the issue without realizing it?
These facts grab attention and immediately frame the conversation as a real problem and not just your opinion.
2. Introduce the Solution with “Imagine”
Next, invite your audience to visualize a better future by introducing your idea or solution. Paint a picture of how your approach changes the game.
Here’s what we did with my client…
- Imagine a revolution in pain management like the rise of functional medicine in healthcare.
- Imagine therapists certified to address not just physical pain, but the relational and psychological aspects as well.
- Imagine an industry of trainers focused on pain resolution instead of just managing symptoms.
This step connects your vision to the problem, helping your audience to see your idea/service as the solution.
3. Land with Impact: “You Don’t Have to Imagine”
Finally, ground the audience in reality by solidifying your idea as the solution:
“You don’t have to imagine it. That’s exactly what we’re doing”
I love these high-stakes communication opportunities because they invite us to focus on what matters most.
When we know how to talk about the things we care about authentically and effectively, we honor the projects that matter to us.
So, next time you have an important, pitch, presentation or podcast, show people exactly what problem you are solving with “Did you know?” and see how they respond.
